Research Funding Research Technicians Initiative

Research Technicians Initiative

Doing research means long days and multiple demands. Since most projects involve more work than any one person can do, the Research Technicians Initiative [RTI] provides the resources necessary to hire the talent you need. Whether it’s used to bring new researchers to the province, or to keep outstanding talent here, the RTI allows you to focus on the critical aspects of your research.

The Research Technicians Initiative (RTI) is a joint initiative between the New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labor (PETL) and the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF).  Launched in 2003 and administered by NBIF, the RTI provides financial assistance to academic institutions and research organizations in New Brunswick for the hiring of research technicians in support of the development of research and innovation capacity in New Brunswick.

Applicants with research that fits one of the Foundation’s strategic industries and eligibility criteria, can request up to a maximum of $75,000 per position created, primarily for salary and benefits spread over three years in the following manner: 1st year @ 65%; 2nd year @ 50%; 3rd year @ 35%. Of the total award, funding can cover up to 65% of the technician’s salary and benefits in the first year. Remaining funds can be used to for up to 50% and 35% of the incumbent’s salary and benefits in the second and final years, respectively. Other matching funds can include direct contributions to the incumbent’s salary and benefits by the college or university, incumbent-related expenses covered by other funding sources, grants obtained by the incumbent, and in-kind contributions.
