Research Innovation Fund Capacity Development

Innovation Capacity Development Initiative

Building a progressive research community demands constant investment in infrastructure. Whether it is for new infrastructure or a project that increases the province’s capacity to innovate, the RIF can help leverage the funding needed to make it happen. The primary purpose of the innovation capacity development initiative is to help build the province’s research capacity by leveraging grants from other funding sources such as the CFI, NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC.

Grants are awarded up to $500,000, and limited to a maximum of 33% of the total cost of the project.

Consequently, applicants that are not successful in obtaining funding from a national granting agency, but can demonstrate, with the support of a peer review, the likelihood receiving one in the future can request up to $10,000 to sustain their initiative. The amount awarded is limited to 50% of the total cost to do so, and is included in the 33% total contribution limit of the RIF when the applicant becomes fully funded. Matching funds can include cash, the value of paid release time, in-kind contributions, and contributions from other funding sources.

Unless otherwise agreed by the Foundation, all funds must be expended within one year of the date disbursed. To enter the review process, applications must demonstrate a fit with one of the Foundation’s strategic industries.
