Research Assistantships Initiative
Balancing the demands of research work requires many different kinds of support. Whether it’s organizing data or performing technical tasks, funding from our Research Assistantships Initiative [RAI] can put your best students to work for you. Provided together with the New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training & Labour, the RAI is beneficial for both professors and the students. In 2012, NBIF awarded $600,000 in research assistantships.
Graduate assistantships can be awarded for two years and a researcher can be funded for more than one graduate research assistantships in any specific round. Undergraduate assistantships are awarded for one year. Graduate assistantships are granted $ 10,000 each, and undergraduate assistantships are granted $5,000 each. RAI contributions can be used to top up other funding sources and can be allocated to one or more students. Funding is advanced to the college or university first, and then disbursed to the student(s) in the form of a salary, fellowship or stipend. Ideally, all funds are to be used within one year, however, any unused funding is automatically extended for one additional year. Additional extensions have to be requested from the NBIF. RAI funding is not transferable to other colleges or universities.
To enter the review process, applications must meet the eligibility criteria of the RAI and fit with one of the Foundation’s strategic industries.
The 2012 RAI competition is now closed.
