Turning research into commercial opportunities plays a big part in creating an appealing and sustainable future for New Brunswick’s most talented minds. At NBIF, we invest in applied research and development projects that demonstrate a potential commercial opportunity for one of our strategic industries. Investing in research that starts from here, our ultimate goal is to help transfer the results of that research into new companies that expand from here. Our success so far tells us this is a worthwhile long-term strategy for supporting a new generation of talent and entrepreneurship in New Brunswick.

Along the timeline from original idea to market entry, the applied research stage is the one that is closest to commercialization: when theory turns into bench tests, pilots and prototypes. Since most research funding in New Brunswick targets fundamental, or theory-based research, the capital we provide researchers and the additional funding they can leverage with it is essential when it comes time to apply it. Applied research is the critical stage that sits between proof of concept and the commercial opportunity that can arise from it. Like the venture capital we provide entrepreneurs, our Research Innovation Fund, Research Assistantships, Associates and Technicians initiatives provides the risk capital professional researchers need to help their ideas take flight.
